International Biology Undergraduate Summer School (BUSS) Zurich

Selected as a Biology Undergraduate Summer Fellow among a international group of students, I spent the summer of 2009 in Zürich, Switzerland. At the Institute for Molecular Life Sciences at the University of Zürich, I participated in an intensive research project under the mentorship of Dr. Silvio Hemmi and Dr. Guillaume Lesage.  We aimed to uncover the role of cellular- and virus-encoded micro RNAs in the human adenovirus life cycle. I worked in a multicultural and multi-linguistic environment, all while gaining exposure to a unique University system. I also expanded on research techniques, including:

  • Technical laboratory skills: Polymerase Chain Reaction, molecular cloning, gel electrophoresis, Western blot, RNA extraction
  • Creating and presenting PowerPoint Presentations on research findings
